Chicago native, now Brooklyn-based vibraphonist, pianist and composer Joel Ross is creating his own star trajectory. After topping the DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star category for vibraphone, he has graduated beyond the Rising Star status to well-honed artist. He recently became one of the youngest artists to earn a coveted Residency Commission from The Jazz Gallery and a spot in The Jazz Gallery All Stars band through which he performed live at The Kennedy Center. Mentored by the Stefon Harris one of the most preeminent vibraphonists and though-leaders of his generation, Ross has collaborated with such artists as Makaya McCraven, Kassa Overall, Maria Grand, Nicole Mitchell, Gerald Clayton, Melissa Aldana, Joshua Redman, and Wynton Marsalis among others.
A talented improviser, Ross saturates live sets with a lyrical intuition that’s equally grounded in melody and phrasing. He plays the moment. Rather than impose energies on the music, he allows moods to set, linger and transform. “Ross’ playing erupts through the layers of lush arrangements like consistent currents of electricity, high-powered and full of luminous energy” (DownBeat).
With two much-praised albums under his belt—KingMaker, and Who Are You?, Ross’ latest release is The Parable of the Poet (2022) on Blue Note Records. Using collaborative improvising, collective melody and instrumental features, the intuitive band leader spotlights unique attributes of fellow artists.
