A Boi-lesque Ballet Presented by Earth Pearl Collective
Created by Sadiqua Iman
Bois of a feather? Boi, stud, butch, gender non-conforming black folk, not conforming to their stereotypes and instead celebrating their unique role in the margins. Tail Feather is about the magic of the butch woman. Her experience of masculinity as safety, seduction, and seclusion serve as a perfect parallel to the display of masculinity in male bird species all over the world. Tail Feather uses dance, spoken word, boilesque, and theatre takes to share stories of masculinity from the masculine centered woman.
Tail Feather is the creative response to an African American queer elder’s question, “ What happened to just being a good ole fashioned butch?” With choreography by her sister, New York choreographer, Alia Kache, and original music by ,queer pop artists, Be Steadwell, this collaborative project will be a memorable tribute to and for the “good ole fashioned butch.” A diverse cast of talent brings an intentional blend of performance styles to this work. Featuring drag king legend- D’Dynasty, boilesque performers- Seductive Tease, Justice, and Namii, pop-lock soloist, TAQUEETS, and. spoken word by Naa Akua. A cast of six, “bois of a feather” that will dig into stereotypes about black queer identity, heteronormative politics within the community, and the sexy, sometimes sticky, dynamics around love and sex.
