The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) announces the 50th Anniversary Celebration for the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute (LHPAI) will be held on September 10 from 1-5 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate the community members and artists that have sustained LHPAI over the past 50 years. Mayor Bruce Harrell will welcome the community.

The Black & Tan Musical

Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute 104 17th Ave South, Seattle

The Black and Tan Musical centers on the story of real-life Seattle Entrepreneur turned nightclub owner E. Russell "Noodles" Smith; Seattle’s ‘Black Godfather’ who shaped the Jackson Street jazz scene of the 1930's and 40’s. Known as a ladies man and gambler, Smith also owned a host of businesses, including two hotels; The Golden West and Coast hotel, where notable African American talent of the day lodged due to segregation in the pre-civil rights era, making Noodles one of the richest men in the Pacific Northwest. The second act centers on the reshaping of the Jackson Street corridor of the late 1960’s and the rise of a hippy Rock guitarists based on Seattle Native Jimi Hendrix.

Earshot Jazz Festival: The Holden Legacy

Earshot and descendants of pianist/clarinetist Oscar Holden, bandmate of Jelly Roll Morton and “Patriarch of Seattle Jazz,” honor the musical heritage of Jackson Street and the Central District. His son, Dave Holden senior, another icon of Seattle jazz and blues, hopes to take the stage as will his daughter, soulful vocalist Darelle Holden.

The Amen Corner

The Williams Project and LANGSTON present the first-ever Seattle production of James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner, directed by Reggie D. White.

The Amen Corner has never had a professional production in Seattle. As a company dedicated to reimagining and expanding "American Classics," we're thrilled to bring this play, at last, to Seattle.
